Gabeh carpets are traditional tribal carpets knotted by the Qashqai tribe in the Zagros mountains of western Iran. The word Gabeh comes from Farsi and can be translated to mean raw, uncut or unfinished, very appropriately bearing reference to the fact that Gabbeh carpets have a rough and primitive look to them.
Persian Gabeh carpets were mostly intended for personal use and were not influenced by commercial demand in the way that many other Persian carpet types were. As such, they remained the mixed result of the skill and artistic expression of the weaver. Simple designs inspired by nature, depicting scenes of everyday nomadic life in stunning colour combinations are very typical, just as the single monochrome tone in tone carpets with no figural elements or very small ones are.
Persian Gabeh carpets are often woven at home by nomads or semi-nomads and made using handspun Persian wool and natural dyes. They are characterized by their thick woolen pile of up to 2.5 cm or more which make them very comfortable to walk on.
Gabeh carpets give your home a cosy feel and are also a great way of absorbing sound in a larger room.
